Can humans get salmonella or e-coli from handling raw dog food?

Poppy's Picnic is handmade, wholesome and 100% natural raw dog food using human grade meat (apart from the green tripe). Handling of this raw meat is no different than how you would handle meat for your own meals at home.

So use the same hygiene rules and common sense that always applies when handling any raw meat:

  • Staying clean. Wash your hands with warm water and soap right after handling raw meat. Make sure to clean off and disinfect any surfaces, counters and utensils which come in contact with the raw meat. Your dog's bowl should be regularly washed and sanitised after feeding.
  • Freeze immediately. Once our raw food packs arrive in the insulated boxes, freeze them straight away! Don't worry if the packs on top have started to defrost, it is okay to freeze again.
  • Defrost safely. It's important when defrosting meat that you don't leave it exposed on a plate on the counter or in the fridge. Always store it in an airtight container until you are ready to serve! Once defrosted, you can keep the raw meat in the fridge for 3 days.

There is bacteria in your dogs mouth already and they pick up all sorts when out and about, so thinking that feeding raw is bringing bugs into your home is just plain wrong. Bacteria can breed in anything, including bags of kibble, and good hygiene is the only way of keeping them at bay, however you feed.
