Any tips on how to handle raw meat?

Poppy's Picnic is handmade, wholesome and 100% natural raw dog food using human grade meat (apart from the green tripe). Handling of this raw meat is no different than how you would handle meat for your own meals at home.  

Therefore, same rules apply! When handling our raw dog food please follow the basic hygiene rules that always applies when handling any raw meat: 

  • Staying clean

Wash your hands with warm water and soap after handling raw meat. Make sure to clean off and disinfect any surfaces, counters and utensils which come in contact with raw meat. Your dog's bowl should also be regularly washed and sanitised after feeding.

  • Freeze the raw food immediately

Once our raw food packs arrive in our lovely Poppy's Picnic insulated boxes, put them in the freezer straight away! Don't worry if the packs on top have started to defrost, as long as the majority of the other packs are still cold to the touch, it is still safe to freeze again. 

  • Defrost safely

It's important when defrosting meat that you don't leave it open and exposed on a plate on the counter or in the fridge. Always store it in an airtight container until you are ready to serve! Once defrosted, you can keep the raw meat in the fridge up to 3 days.

It's important to note that there is bacteria in your dogs mouth already and they pick up all sorts when out and about, so thinking that feeding raw is bringing bugs into your home is wrong. Bacteria can breed in anything, including bags of kibble, and good hygiene is the only way of keeping them at bay, however you feed.
